"its security, is there anybody in there named joe?"

"no there isnt"

Right before those pix were taken, some very large lady tried to tell us it was a no smoking boat. I replied, "First of all, I don't see any signs, and besides that, you ain't my Mom." We did the Chick n Tom show in the motel room on the NY side, but had to do the PG13 version...Little Dead Surfer Girl was a big crowd pleaser.

Hey,

Guy, I don't know dick about bikes, but I can remember the lyrics to a fair number of songs I've heard over my 50-odd (odd, indeed) years - glad to be of service.

Rev. Chico - since Dave appears to be taking a time out from the website, I figure I can talk geek to my heart's content, so to answer your question about linking to newsgroups...

...a discourse.

First a simple answer to your question. If the name of your newsgroup is talk.bizarre, you would link to it like this:

 <a href="news:talk.bizarre">Read the talk.bizarre newsgroup</a>

Clicking on the link you made to your newsgroup will open the user's newsgroup reader, if they have one.

Nowadays, most people have Outlook Express, which has UseNet newsreader capabilities, in many cases it has never been set up correctly.

Your link above will fail for such users, or prompt for configuration information that the user knows nothing about.

So how come it doesn't work like a normal link?

Now, you're probably saying something like, "Oh, OK... but what about all that crap you wrote yesterday about absolute links & relative links & bla bla bla etc., etc?" (or maybe not , but I'll pretend like you are...)

  "What makes newsgroups different" ?

Well, that's an interesting question with a bit of history.

Newsgroups are a part of Usenet, & Usenet ain't the web.

"So, if it's not the web, what is it?"

Well... "Usenet is a set of protocols for generating, storing and retrieving news "articles" (which resemble Internet mail messages) and for exchanging them among a readership which is potentially widely distributed."

"Usenet is one of the oldest computer network communications systems still in widespread use. It was established in 1980, following experiments from the previous year, over a decade before the World Wide Web was introduced and the general public got access to the Internet. This system, developed at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University, was called USENET to emphasize its creators' hope that the USENIX organization would take an active role in its operation... (wikipedia.org), (Daniel et al, 1980).

So you see, Usnet is one set of protocols, & http is another set of protocols, & never the twain shall meet.

HTTP (Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol) is a communications protocol for the transfer of information on the World Wide Web. Its original purpose was to provide a way to publish and retrieve hypertext pages over the Internet. This protocol tells your client application (like Firefox or Internet Explorer) how to handle information transfer from the server to your computer (so you can read my page) & from your computer to my server (so you can post to our guestbook).

I'm going to stop there for tonight - it's been a long, hot day ...

maybe more later about languages & how to talk to your computer (unless somebody starts to scream "GEEK!!!!")

Until then, just remember - There are 10 kinds of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who don't.

A+

Randy...thanx much for putting my pix up...Cheeks...I know you are into posting yer own stuff...but for me and my limited ability here...just like anything else I would like done but dont have the professional chops....I go to the expert...and again much thanx to you Mon frere Randy and may your wine glass always be half-full. The top MC pix is of a 1921 Ner-A-Car....described in an earlier post...these are possibly among the rarest of motorcycles cuz' there just were not that many made.....12 hp,sohv,friction-drive at first and then chain drive in later production. The second bike is the fabled in song and story 1952 Vincent-Black Lightning....2 cylinder,30 hp, dohv, 6volt negative ground lucas. a very early predesessor to cafe' bikes and todays crotch rockets(I like my bikes with "normal" stance and seating....much safer than clip-ons)and Randy you did yourself proud by adding the Richard Thompson song lyrics for 1952 Vincent-Black Lightning. I like his the best, but Del Coury did a great Bluegrass send-up. When I was 16 I bought a 1964 Ducati MoMo from my neighbor for 50 bux. It did not run. 450 c.c. Desmo-Valve single cylinder. The piston was HUGE and it had no compression-release....this bike kicked me over the handlebars more than once. Took out my volt-ohm meter and started looking for grounded wires and found that one of the primary wires from the ignition coil had chafed off its insulation and grounded to the frame. 2 days later I was riding it up and down the street. I rode this bike while I attended Westport High and truly look like on of "The Wild Ones"...except I did not wear a leather...I wore an army coat.Ended up putting some Dunlop K/91 racing tires on it and this baby would just handle...that Italian frame geometry was near perfect. God...what a bike...a real bike....no drive by wire...had to keep tools and the essential screwdriver to make jetting adjustments according to what kind of weather I was riding in...Rode it through Sleepy Hollow and the rest of Oldham County...a true thumper.....GJl I am going to post some vintage guitars next........FenderBirds Rule!

Hey,

I haven't gotten to see Ratatouilie yet, but the girls did & they loved it. I guess I'll just have to wait for the DvD to hit the local supermarché - don't get around much any more ;o)

So, Rev. Cheeks, you want to link our humble buestbook to the scary outside world; well it shouldn't be a problem if you just follow this simple

GeekSpeek tutorial:

Links: & how to make 'em (drumroll, please- OK that's enough...)

 1.Absolute vs Relative Links

There are two kinds of links - absolute & relative. Absolute links are the full web address of the page (or thingie) you want to link to, & ALWAYS start with http://. For example, an absolute link to this page would look like this:

<a href="http://www.momenlivre.com/pranksters/newBook.php title="pranksters guestbokk" target="_blank">some text</a>

or

<a href="http://pranksters.momenlivre.com/newBook.php title="pranksters guestbokk" target="_blank">some text</a>

if you're linking to this page from another site, (or linking to a page on another site  here) you have to use an absolute link.

If you want to link to another page (or picture) on the prankster's site, you can use a relative link. The "relative" bit in relative links  always starts from the level where you are now; for example, if you want to link to one of your pictures in the  gallery, the link would look like this:

<a href="minishowcase/galleries/00-2nd_NortonsCommons_show/dave.jpg title="" target="_blank">some text</a>

that tells the browser to start from pranksters.momenlivre.com (tht's where you are now) & drill down to your pic. You can use absolute links with pages on this site if you want to, but you can never use relative links for pages that are not on this site.

Luckily, you don't have to type all that link stuff in by hand like I did, since there's a handy link button that writes the code for you

2. Using the Link Button

To make this work with the link button on the guestbook, first select some text, then click on the button that looks like two links of a chain (the Insert/Edit Link button). That will open this popup window

linkpopup

  • In the "Link URL" field, type in the web address, either absolute or relative
  • Select "Open Link in New Window" from the target drop-down menu
  • Write in a title to explain the link
  • forget about Class -we ain't got none.

Then click Insert & that's it - link's done

See? - easy...I hope

BTW - ever figure out why your display is FUBAR?

A+
